Atlantis Hydrotec® FTTH D-Type Solution is the quickest and most cost effective way forward.
2016 saw continued rollout and uptake of home fibre connections in South Africa. The reality is that FTTH figures that are based on home passes and not actual active connections. The current status of FTTH connection, is a slow and costly process taking into consideration that connection in the home owners premises becomes a project on its own and one only finds out the real challenges once the contractor gets on site, in many cases these projects become costly and face challenges regarding the gardens, lifting of driveways (cement, paving bricks, tar, etc.) and getting access to the home, mostly to the agony of the client, as many want a simple installation with the least amount of damage done to their property.
PIVOTEL the main distribution partner for CRALEY in South Africa, in conjunction with one of its partners FIBER OPTIC SERVICES & CABLING, successfully completed a 120 meter Atlantis Hydrotec® FTTH solution, with 4 core fibre in Grootfontein Country Estate, Teigerpoort. The installation was part of an incentive to showcase how cost effective and quickly deployment of this method is compared to the tedious traditional methods of trenching. Andreas Botha the CTO of Pivotel said that the cost and the time it takes to install certainly makes deployment up to 5 times quicker with a team of only two. Currently, at least 4 people are required to connect one home.
According to Andreas Botha, the installation of the Atlantis Hydrotec, proved to be a remarkably successful undertaking. Two holes were dug, one at the water meter and the other at the customers office. The D type coupling was attached to the property’s main water pipe half metre from the water meter and again at the home. The 120 metres of micro duct was inserted with the greatest of ease after which a 2mm, 4 core fibre was pushed in by hand – no problem. Termination boxes were mounted at both ends and the installation was complete. In that period of time, the water only had to be off for approximately 30 minutes. The entire installation only took between 2 and 3 hours. This means that two teams could theoretically install up to 50 homes per week therefore making deployment of home connections up to 10 times quicker than the current methods a typical installation will take about 90 minutes.
